NAMM 2020: Like the guitar pedal on which it’s based, the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath 16HP Eurorack module is an otherworldly reverb unit, just released at NAMM.

Hooked up to your modular synth rig, the Afterneath produces sounds that span from ping-ponging delay to cavernous subterranean echoes. It is, as EQD, describes it, “an ambient powerhouse and an instrument unto itself”.

The all-analogue module has one main audio input, one audio output, an audio send and return for the feedback path (controlled by the Reflect knob), and nine controls. Four parameters can controlled by CV: Diffuse, Length, Drag and Mode.

The Drag feature is one of the module’s highlights: it changes the character, fidelity, decay and even pitch of the effect. And you can crank up the Reflect and Length controls to have the Afterneath self-oscillate.

The Afterneath module has nine main modes, which include:

  • Unquantised Volt/Octave: Smooth and unquantised, but lets the user control the modulation of audio or the frequency of self-oscillation
  • Chromatic Scale: 1v/octave to the chromatic scale
  • Pentatonic Scale: 1v/octave to the pentatonic scale
  • Octaves & Fifths: 1v/octave that omits all except for octaves and fifths
  • Octaves: 1v/octave that omits all except for octaves
